Solution

Sentence Analysis

  • Using study groups (Verb-ing modifier modifying the subject of the main clause)
    • managed by the principal popular organizations and political parties, (verb-ed modifier modifying “study groups”)
  • the Swedish public was informed (Main Subject – “Swedish Public”; Main Verb – “was informed”)
    • by the government (prepositional phrase modifying the main verb)
    • about energy and nuclear power. (prepositional phrase modifying the main verb)

The sentence means that the Swedish public used study groups and was informed by the government about energy and nuclear power.

Logically, the government must have used the study groups to inform the Swedish public. Thus, this sentence has a meaning error introduced by wrong modification.

Option Analysis

(A) Incorrect. For the error mentioned above.

(B) Correct.

(C) Incorrect. For the following reasons:

  1. Wrong modification – from this option, it seems that the information used the study groups!!
  2. I agree with the OG explanation saying that “information was given” is less concise than “informed”
  3. I agree with the OG explanation saying that “energy and nuclear power information” is less preferred than “information about energy and nuclear power”.

(D) Incorrect. For the following reasons:

  1. Error no. 1 of option C
  2. Problem no. 2 of option C (2nd point of option C is not an error. It is a preference issue)

(E) Incorrect. For the following reasons:

  1. Same modification error as in the original sentence.
  2. I agree with the OG explanation saying that “the public of Sweden” is awkward compared to “the Swedish public”.
  3. Problem no. 3 of option C
